How to dress kids in Layers?
Layering your kids clothes helps to retain heat, leads moisture away from the body and helps to keep the cold out without overheating your child. You should add or remove a layer when there is a change in weather or activity levels. Wear layers 1, 2 and 3 when the temperature drops below 5°C.
Layer 1: The inner layer that keeps the body warm and dry. Usually a thermal made from wool or polyester.
Layer 2: The middle layer that insulates warmth under the outer layer. This can be a kids fleece or puffer jacket.
Layer 3: The outer layer that keeps the warmth in and the weather out. Usually a waterproof for kids.
Layer 1 - Thermals For Kids
In really cold temperatures, a kids base layer made from wool or polyester helps to keep children warm. You should avoid cotton when cold because it traps moisture next to the skin, this meaning that your child will still feel the cold.
Warm Merino wool children's base layers will lock in warmth next to the skin much better than cotton. Good thermals for kids should lead cold moisture away from the skin, and wool does the job perfectly. A soft wool base layer is best for very cold temperatures.
Polyester base layers are a cheaper alternative to wool and can still be very effective - Polarn O. Pyret use soft fibres made from recycled materials. Perfect for under school uniforms and PE kits children will stay warm outdoors, yet not feel too hot once they are indoors again.
A polyester base layer is soft as silk and ideal for active and adventurous kids.
Layer 2 - Insulating Mid Layers
Made of hi-tech breathable fleece, light insulation or terry wool, this mid layer will retain heat yet release any moisture. If the garment is not breathable, your childs body can quickly turn cold, or overheat.
You should ensure that your kids fleece mid layer has a zip or other opening that makes it easy for them to open and remove on their own.
Our lightweight kids puffer jackets & fleeces attach to our waterproof kids shell jackets. Allowing you to choose whether they're used on their own or together, this to make a warm coat in winter or a single garment in milder weather!
Layer 3 - Waterproofs For Kids
The outer layer keeps warmth in and the weather out. Children's outerwear should be highly durable and be able to withstand any possible weather in order to handle outdoor play & adventure. Kids waterproofs help to keep the body dry in rain, hail and snow.
Polarn O. Pyret outer layer fabrics are wind & waterproof, yet highly breathable. They hold in heat whilst feeling light and without restricting the movement of your child.
A garment is classed as water resistant if it can withstand a water column of at least 3,000mm. For children to stay dry, even when sitting and playing in puddles, their outer clothing should be able to withstand at least 5,000 mm.
Many of Polarn O. Pyrets waterproofs for kids have a rating of 10,000 mm.
Insulated, padded coats are important if you're going to spend over 2 hours in freezing temperatures, but for all other winter weather a quality waterproof worn with the right layers underneath should suffice.
